Into the Light

“Let there be light!” These were the first recorded words spoken by God and out of these words darkness shrank away, gloom was dispelled, and the whole world was illuminated.  This recurring moment marks the beginning of creation and God’s love for His creatures.  In the New Testament, Christ teaches us that He is the Light of the World and with Him we will have Everlasting Life.  To be with Christ, we are invited to step into the light, become illumined and transformed, and ascend further up and further in.  This journey may be long and arduous, but we have a roadmap, instructions, and guides.

The early church used images and architecture to teach pilgrims how to navigate this journey.  The images or icons depict moments in the Bible, reveal the Truth, and ultimately draw viewers closer to Christ.  Even the design of a church building points back to the life of Christ.  The purpose of these two elements – icons and architecture – are to bring Heaven on Earth.  

Step into the Light: Transformation through the Orthodox Icon will serve as a guidebook to pilgrims wanting to follow Christ.  In this book, readers will learn how icons are written and how by simply seeing an icon a person’s light might be transformed.  The book will review the architectural elements of Orthodox churches to demonstrate how they orient one towards Christ.  In the second part of this book, the reader will find Biblical stories that are shown in the iconography of St George in Fishers, IN, see how they are connected, and receive instruction on how to fulfill one’s journey.  Lastly, we the reader will learn about our guides (the saints) and how they became transformed and ascended to heaven.
