Part I:  Liturgy Variables

Troparion of the Prefeast of the Theophany (Tone 4)

Make ready, O Zebulon, and prepare, O Nephtali, and thou, River Jordan, cease thy flow, and receive with joy the Master coming to be baptized. And thou, Adam, rejoice with the first mother, and hide not yourselves as ye did of old in paradise; for having seen thee naked, He appeared to clothe thee with the first robe. Yea, Christ hath appeared desiring to renew the whole creation.

Troparion of St. George (Tone 4)

Liberator of captives, Defender of the poor, the Physician of the sick and the Champion of kings, O Trophy-bearer, Great martyr George, intercede with Christ our God that our souls be saved.

Kontakion of the Prefeast of the Theophany (Tone 4)

Today hath the Lord appeared in the courses of the Jordan, crying to John and saying, Be not dismayed at my Baptism; for I have verily come to save Adam, the first to be created.

.

2nd Epistle of St. Paul to Timothy  (4.5-8; Sunday before Epiphany)

Timothy, my son, always be steady, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.

For I am already on the point of being sacrificed; the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.

Holy Gospel according to St. Mark (1.1-8; Sunday before Epiphany)

The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. As it is written in the prophets, “Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way; the voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make His paths straight.” John the Baptizer appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And there went out to him all the country of Judea and all the people of Jerusalem; and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel’s hair, and had a leather girdle around his waist, and ate locusts and wild honey. And he preached, saying, “After me comes He Who is mightier than I, the thong of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. I have baptized you with water; but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.

Great feast of the Epiphany of Christ

The voice of the Lord upon the waters cries aloud saying: “Come ye all, and receive the Spirit of wisdom, the Spirit of understanding, the Spirit of the fear of God, from Christ, Who is made manifest.”

Tomorrow—January 5, the Eve of the Epiphany—is a strict fast day. We conclude it with celebration of the Divine Liturgy and the Great Blessing of the Waters at 6 p.m. Monday. From there Fr. Nabil will carry the water and the celebration to all our homes, as he begins a new round of home blessings.

Wednesday study: Forgotten Books of the Bible

Every Wednesday evening we meet at 6 p.m. at 116th Street for prayer, dinner and study. The dinner is prepared for you, so you don’t have to bring anything (unless you want to take a turn preparing it).

In January and February bring your Orthodox Study Bible (the new edition that includes the Old Testament) or another Bible that includes the so-called Apocrypha. We’ll look at books of the Bible including Tobit, Sirach, Maccabees, Susanna, Judith and Wisdom of Solomon.

Conflict in Gaza Kills Hundreds: Help IOCC
Speed Relief to Families Caught in Attacks
For Immediate Release: December 31, 2008

Baltimore, MD — The deadliest conflict in Gaza in four decades has killed hundreds and wounded thousands. International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC) has released emergency funds and is working in cooperation with other humanitarian aid organizations to deliver medical supplies and pharmaceuticals to Gaza hospitals that are stretched to capacity. “Gaza was already in a desperate situation before this increased conflict with a significant lack of food, medicine, fuel and electricity. All commodities are in scarce supply,” said Dirk Lackovic-van Gorp, IOCC’s Representative for the Palestinian Territories.

Although it remains difficult to get supplies into Gaza, IOCC is working with organizations that have significant operations inside the territory and who are in touch with government officials and United Nations personnel to gain access. Lackovic-van Gorp reports that the greatest need now is life-saving drugs and medical supplies to equip hospitals which have been forced to turn away the injured.

Before this latest conflict, IOCC had announced a new initiative for Gaza including food and hygiene supplies and repairs to youth centers through an Action by Churches Together (ACT) appeal. IOCC is currently working in cooperation with ACT members to respond to this emergency. IOCC has implemented a variety of educational and school repair programs in the Palestinian Territories since 1997 when it opened its first office in Jerusalem.

Help IOCC speed relief to families who have been caught in this conflict. Visit www.iocc.org, call IOCC toll free at 1-877-803-4622, or mail a check or money order payable to “IOCC” and write “Middle East Relief” in the memo line to: IOCC, P.O. Box 630225, Baltimore, Md. 21263-0225. And during this time of year when we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, please join us in praying that His peace may reign in the Holy Land and throughout the word. IOCC, founded in 1992 as the official humanitarian aid agency of the Standing Conference of Canonical Orthodox Bishops in the Americas (SCOBA), has implemented over $275 million in relief and development programs in 33 countries around the world.

Marriage Preparation Workshop

Any couple thinking about getting married in 2009 is invited to attend a pre-marriage seminar with guest speaker Very Rev Dr Michael Dahulich on January 17, from 9am to 5 pm. This will be at St Michael Church in Louisville. There is no cost (and lunch is included!). Just RSVP by Jan. 12 to (502) 454-3378.

Parish Council Preparation

Also at St. Michael’s, Louisville, on January 17, there will be a parish council seminar. This is another opportunity to learn about the work of the parish council—really it is about the work of the Church—in case you missed the workshop held here last month. Such training is required before someone can be considered a candidate for the council.

Former Pastor Celebrates Fifty Years of Ministry

Fr. Joseph Shaheen served this parish from 1960-69, overseeing the construction of our current temple. He now serves as Pastor of St. Paul Church, Naples, Florida, which celebrates its 12th Anniversary Feb. 12-13, when Fr. Joseph also celebrates his 50th Anniversary in the priesthood. A commemorative book is being prepared, highlighting his accomplishments. Forms are available in our church office if you’d like to subscribe and send a greeting by the Jan. 30 deadline.

Remember Your STEWARDSHIP Recommitment

If you haven’t done so already, we are asking all to drop off their pledge cards into the box at the candle stand before leaving today. Please re-evaluate your stewardship commitments for the coming year. This is the pledge we make to continue the support of our present church operations for the coming year. We are excited about our future and want to carry on the legacy established by our parish founders.

You will find pledge cards in the back of your pew and at the candle stand. Please fill out your pledge for the coming year, and deposit it in the locked box located at the candle stand. You may also mail it directly to the church. Please know that your pledge is confidential, and only Father Nabil will open the pledge box.

May God Bless Your Home and All Who Dwell in It

Christmas concludes with Epiphany, the 12th Day of Christmas. Part of our Epiphany celebration includes taking the blessed water to the homes of all our parishioners. Thus Fr. Nabil would like to come and visit with you, pray with you and ask God to bless your home. It would help in setting up his schedule if you would kindly return the coupon below. Father would like to do his best to see everybody before the start of Lent (March 2).
